Installing insulation or coordinating retrofit work? Tell us what you install and how much, and we'll find insurers who understand the trade.

Retrofit and insulation installer insurance covers businesses that improve the energy efficiency of existing buildings, including cavity wall, external wall, internal wall and loft insulation installers, along with retrofit coordinators, assessors and designers. Installers need public and products liability for damage caused by their work, employers' liability, contract works and tools cover. Coordinators and assessors need professional indemnity for their advice and design decisions. The trade carries a long tail of claims: badly fitted or unsuitable insulation can cause damp and structural problems that appear years later. Insurers therefore look at the products used, installer training and certification, the guarantee arrangements, the type of properties worked on and any history of complaints. Firms with past claims can still find cover, but they need a specialist approach.

Key facts at a glance

  1. Claims can appear years later. Damp and defects from poor installation often surface long after the job is finished.
  2. Products liability is central. Cover must respond to damage caused by the insulation itself, not just the work.
  3. Coordinators need PI. Retrofit coordinators and assessors make design decisions that need professional indemnity.
  4. Certification matters. Insurers look for PAS 2030, PAS 2035 and TrustMark registration.
  5. Past claims don't rule you out. Specialist markets will look at installers with a history, with the right presentation.

Who needs retrofit and insulation installer insurance?

We arrange cover for businesses across the retrofit chain, from assessment to installation.

Why is insulation work a specialist risk?

The biggest risk is not an accident on the day but a defect that shows up later. Insulation fitted to an unsuitable wall can lead to damp, mould and structural damage years after installation.

Cavity wall insulation has a long history of complaints and claims, and external wall insulation has faced scrutiny over poor installations under government-funded schemes. Insurers know this. They want evidence that properties are surveyed properly, that suitable products are used, and that work is signed off and guaranteed.

Many standard liability policies exclude damage caused by damp or condensation, or limit products cover for insulation. That can leave an installer exposed to exactly the claims most likely to arise.

Check the damp exclusion

If your liability policy excludes damage from damp, condensation or gradual causes, it may not respond to the most common insulation claims. Ask your broker to confirm how the wording works.

What do insurers ask about an installer?

Insurers look at the work, the products, the paperwork and the history.

  • Measures installed and the split of work by type
  • Products and systems used, and their certification
  • PAS 2030, PAS 2035, TrustMark and scheme registrations
  • How properties are surveyed before work starts
  • Guarantee arrangements for completed work
  • Use of subcontractors and how they are checked
  • Complaints, remedial work and claims history

How can installers improve their terms?

  1. Survey every property. Record suitability before installing.
  2. Use certified systems. And follow the manufacturer's instructions.
  3. Keep job records. Photos, surveys and sign-offs for every installation.
  4. Arrange guarantees. Insurance-backed guarantees reassure underwriters.
  5. Handle complaints well. Show how issues are put right.
  6. Check subcontractors. Make sure they carry their own cover.
