Running or opening an activity bar or games venue? Tell us what your customers do, and we'll find cover that fits the activity and the bar together.

Competitive socialising venue insurance covers bars and leisure venues built around a game or activity, such as golf simulators, darts lanes, crazy golf, shuffleboard, axe throwing, VR, pickleball and interactive game rooms. It combines the covers a licensed bar needs, such as public and employers' liability, stock, loss of licence and money, with cover for the activity itself and the expensive equipment behind it. Most venues also need contents and fit-out cover, equipment breakdown for screens and scoring technology, business interruption and cyber cover for online bookings. Insurers look at the activity, how alcohol is managed around it, venue layout, supervision, group bookings and your licence. Many pub insurers won't rate the activity, and many sports insurers won't rate the bar, so cover usually comes from specialist leisure markets.

Key facts at a glance

  1. Bar plus activity. Insurers rate the alcohol and the game together, and many standard policies only handle one.
  2. Participant exclusions are the big trap. Some liability wordings exclude injuries to people taking part, which is most of your customers.
  3. Technology is a large part of the value. Simulators, scoring systems and VR kit need full replacement and breakdown cover.
  4. Group bookings drive the risk. Stag and hen parties, corporate events and children's parties must be declared.
  5. New formats need a specialist. Many insurers have no category for newer activities.

Which venues do we insure?

We arrange cover for bars and venues where a game or activity is the main reason customers visit, from single-site independents to multi-site operators.

What does competitive socialising insurance cover?

A typical policy combines liability, property, licensed premises and income covers in one package.

Public liabilityInjuries to customers and the publicParticipant and assault exclusions
Employers' liabilityInjuries to staffA legal requirement once you employ anyone
Contents and fit-outGames equipment, technology, bar and themed fit-outTenant's improvements and imported kit valuations

Why standard policies often fall short

Pub insurers are built for drinking, and sports insurers are built for playing. Competitive socialising venues do both at once, often late at night, and that combination is where standard policies leave gaps.

The most common problem is a liability wording that excludes injuries to participants. In a darts bar or simulator venue, nearly every customer is a participant, so that exclusion removes most of the cover you think you have. The second is equipment: contents policies cover damage, not breakdown, and many venues depend on technology that fails more often than it burns.

Name every activity on the schedule

If an activity isn't declared, an insurer can decline a claim arising from it. When you add a new game, tell your broker before it opens.

What do insurers ask about a competitive socialising venue?

Insurers ask about the activities, the bar, the layout, your customers and your safety controls.

  • Each activity you offer and how it's supervised
  • Your premises licence, hours and alcohol turnover
  • Layout, including spacing between activities, seating and walkways
  • Group bookings, parties and corporate events
  • Door staff, CCTV and glass policy
  • Equipment values and how the technology is maintained
  • Claims history and your management team's experience

How do you set up cover for a new venue?

  1. List every activity. And how each one is supervised.
  2. Value your fit-out and equipment. At full replacement cost.
  3. Share your licence and projections. New venues are rated on forecasts.
  4. Read your lease. Landlords set insurance requirements.
  5. Cover the fit-out works. Before you open.
  6. Review after opening. Update turnover and activities as you grow.
