Contract Research Laboratory Insurance UK
Contract research laboratory insurance covers businesses that carry out research, testing or analysis for clients, including contract research organisations, analytical and testing labs and bioanalytical services. Because clients make decisions based on your results, professional indemnity is the most important cover. A wrong result, a lost sample or a missed deadline can lead to large claims, especially from pharmaceutical and food clients. Labs also need cover for client samples and materials in their care, deterioration of stock, equipment, business interruption and liability. Insurers look at the services you provide, your clients and their sectors, accreditation and quality systems, contract terms and liability caps, and how client samples are stored and tracked.
Key facts at a glance
- PI is the core cover. Clients rely on your results to make expensive decisions.
- Client samples need cover. Materials held for clients must be insured in your care.
- Contracts set the exposure. Liability caps and indemnities shape the risk.
- Accreditation helps. ISO 17025 and GLP or GMP status reassure insurers.
- Pharma clients raise the stakes. Errors in drug development work can be very costly.

Why do client contracts matter so much?
Large clients, especially pharmaceutical companies, often send contracts that ask the lab to accept wide or unlimited liability.
Your PI policy will only pay up to its limit, and it may not cover liabilities you agree to by contract that you wouldn't otherwise have. Before signing, check the liability cap, any indemnities, and the insurance clause. Where possible, cap liability at the fee or a multiple of it. Send contracts to us if you're unsure; it's much easier to fix wording before signature than after a claim.
An uncapped indemnity in a client contract can leave you exposed beyond your insurance. Negotiate a cap or check with your broker before signing.
